AB OBJECTIVE: To detect HIV genes in saliva on inactivated [disinfected]
filter paper disks--after safe transport--by using PCR technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have further developed and improved this
method for use with saliva samples. Eighty-three saliva from patients
with AC, ARC and AIDS [42 hemophiliacs; 10 homosexuals; 10
heterosexuals] were collected and applied to filter disks, dried and
disinfected by elevated temperatures. HIV DNA, HIV RNA, occult blood and
HIV antibody in saliva were analyzed by PCR, RT-PCR, strip method and
particle agglutination, respectively. RESULTS: Occult blood, HIV Ab, HIV
RNA and HIV DNA were positively detected from the saliva. The results
did not depend on the stage of the disease or the route of infection.
DISCUSSION: The filter paper disk method can be used not only for the
detection of Abs but also for HIV-genome from saliva samples.
